Native Hawaiians have used this salt for centuries in sacred ceremonies to purify and bless tools, canoes, and homes.
It is sea salt mixed with volcanic clay dust. Volcanic clay (Alaea) contains a high concentration of iron oxide, which gives it its red color. Clay dust has no taste or smell, but it enriches the salt with over 80 different types of minerals.
It is used for all kinds of meat dishes, soups and stews. Recently, it has become increasingly popular as an addition to chocolate desserts and ice creams.
